war This is not the worst *state activity: see *democide. Without *taxation, it could hardly be afforded. Bill Gates (1955- ) at his richest could not have funded the invasion and occupation of *Iraq for more than a month or so. There is no incentive to war in the *market. But the state gains *power and *prestige by going to war, and there is little or no risk to the armchair ‘warrior’-*politicians who wage it.
